  • In mid-1700's Britain became obsessed with tea.It overtook beer as Britain’s favorite brew.
  • The only problem was that the Chinese weren’t purchasing any British goods in return. Britain was simply dumping its silver into China, creating a serious balance of payments problem.
  • The British responded by growing opium in India — largely in Bengal, Patna, Benares and the Malwa plateau — and smuggling it into China, in exchange for their beloved beverage.

  • Machine learning, a branch of artificial intelligence, can generate remarkably accurate predictions. It works by crunching vast quantities of data in search of patterns.
  • Take, for example, restaurant hygiene. The system learns which combinations of sometimes obscure factors are most suggestive of a problem. Once trained, it can assess the risk that a restaurant is dirty.
  • Governments are taking notice. A London borough is developing an algorithm to predict who might become homeless. In India Microsoft is helping schools predict which students are at risk of dropping out.

Elite unit of the Armed Forces AFSOD begins operations

  • The Armed Forces Special Operations Division (AFSOD), the elite unit of commandos drawn from all the three armed forces has begun functioning on may 15.
  • This decision would not only bring the three forces under a common command, but would also reduce costs of training, administration and logistics. The new team would begin with a small team of commandos
  • It would have around 3,000 trained commandos who could carry out warfare in jungles, at seat and rescue helicopter operations.
