Ahmedabad originally called as Karnavati

  • During 11th century, Karna of Chaulukya dynasty made Ahmedabad his capital, and named it Karnavati (Karna's town)
  • Ahmedabad during that time was also named Shrinagar (prosperous city) and Rajnagar (king's town), but Karnavati remained the most popular name
  • Chaulukya rule weakened in the second half of the 13th century, Vaghela dynasty rose to power in Gujarat in 1243, but the name still remained
