Growth of radio in INDIA.

  • Broadcasting began in India in 1924 with the setting up of a private radio service in Madras.
  • Industries started operating them as Indian State Broadcasting corporation.The Corporation came to be called the All India Radio(AIR) in 1936.
  • When India became independent , the All India Radio was made a separate department under Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
  • AIR was renamed as Akashvani , and is owned by government.The network had been expanded by the mid 1990's to around 146 AM stations.
  • There are 5 regional headquarters of AIR it provides both national and local programmes in Hindi,English and Regional languages.
  • Commercial radio services in India started in 1967 with Vividh Bharati which has its headquarters in Mumbai.
  • The FM broadcasting in India began in 1977 in Madras.The private broadcasters emerged after 1990's especially in Mumbai,Delhi,Kolkata,Goa and Chennai.
  • They were soon followed by stations in Hyderabad,Jaipur and Lucknow.Radio Mirchi and Red FM were among the few that managed to sustain themselves.
