What is the issue between India and Nepal?

  • Six months after India released its new political map placing Kalapani- an area that falls in the tri-junction between India, China, Nepal within its border.
  • Kathmandu unveiled a new map recently showing the region along with Limpiyadhuru and Lipulekh ares in Uttrakhand as a part of its territory.
  • The issue grew when the defense ministers Rajnath Singh inaugurated an 80 km long road from Uttarakhand to Lipulekh Pass.
  • The road is to serve as a faster route for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Pilgrims.
  • Nepal was disappointed and claimed that the road passed through its territory.
  • Government of Nepal has said that as per the Saguali Treaty (1816) , all the territories east of Mahakali river, including Limpiyadhuru, Kalapani and Lipulekh, belong to Nepal.
  • Recently Nepal also released a new map showing all the three regions in its territory.
  • Nepal PM K. P. Sharma Oli said, “Diplomatic efforts would be made to bring back the territories.”
  • This statement of him created further tension.
