Lathe machine (" A Remarkable Invention of Industrial era")

  • The bed of Lathe acts as the base on which the different fixed and operations parts of the Lathe are mounted.
  • The head stock serves as a housing for the driving pulleys and back gears, provides bearing for the machine spindle. It is a fixed part.
  • It is mounted on the bed of the lathe such that it is capable of sliding along the latter maintaining its alignment with the head stock.
  • Chuck in lathe is work or job holding device. It is mainly of two types three jaw and four jaw chuck.
  • The lathe carriage serves the purpose of supporting, guiding and feeding the tool against the job during the operation of the lathe.
  • The compound Rest will be placed over the cross slide and it consists of a graduated circular base which is having swiveling nature.
  • It is the top most part of the carriage and is used for holding the tool or tool holder in position.
  • A leadscrew (or lead screw), also known as a power screw or translation screw, is a screw used as a linkage in a machine, to translate turning motion into linea
  • Operations can be performed are : Straight turning,Taper turning,Profiling,Turning and external grooving, Facing , Face grooving, boring, drilling, knurling.
  • Also called as "Mother of Machine tools"
  • First developed by Ancient Egiptians (around 1300 BCE).
  • "It is the machine tool which rotates the workpiece on its axis to perform various operations."
  • Basically three types : Engine Lathe, Bench Lathe , Speed Lathe( high and low speed lathe)
  • Applications : Wooden objects(e.g. baseball bat),Precision parts, acrylic parts(e.g.top pieces of trophies) and pottery pieces.
