Chandrayan - 2

  • Chandrayaan-2 is India's planned second mission to the moon,It's a follow-up mission from the Chandrayaan-1 mission that assisted in confirming the presence of water/hydroxyl on the moon in 2009.
  • It will be launch during the window of July 09, to July 16, 2019, with an expected Moon landing on September 06, 2019.
  • Chandrayaan-2, India’s second lunar mission, has three modules namely Orbiter,Lander (Vikram)&Rover (Pragyan). The Orbiter and Lander modules will be interfaced mechanically and stacked together as an integrated module.
  • The Rover is housed inside the Lander. After launch by GSLV MK-III, the integrated module will reach Moon orbit using Orbiter propulsion module. Subsequently, Lander will separate from the Orbiter to carry out experiment
  • The payloads will collect scientific information on lunar topography, mineralogy, elemental abundance, lunar exosphere and signatures of hydroxyl and water-ice.
  • Chandrayan 1 had a lunar probe and a impactor. It means that a probe hits the moon after detaching from orbiter but does not locomote. This type of landing is called hard landing.
  • But Chandrayan 2 in a lander/rover so after the probe hits the ground a rover can move around the moon. This type of landing is called soft landing.
  • If India succeed it, will become the fourth nation to accomplish soft landing on moon after US,USSR and China.
  • It will have will have 13 payloads of ISRO and one passive experiment from American space agency NASA.
