What does the Seismology center of a country do?

  • Our Earth's interior is in a constant state of movement, releasing energy in packets known as seismic waves. Seismology is a branch of geophysics which studies these waves and their effects.
  • These seismic waves can be devastating when experienced in the form of earthquakes.
  • The secondary effects of earthquakes are most often seen in the form of a tsunami or tidal wave. Seismology also is used to study Earth's interior, about which it has revealed a great deal.
  • Now the center of Seismology of any country provides earthquake surveillance and hazard reports to governmental agencies.
  • It consists of various divisions: 1) Earthquake Monitoring & Services 2) Earthquake Hazard & Risk Assessments 3) Geophysical Observation Systems
